Kangaroo Ridge Retreat Achieves EcoStar Accreditation for Sustainable Accommodation in the Yarra Valley

Kangaroo Ridge Retreat has achieved EcoStar Accreditation, recognising our commitment to practical, place-based sustainability in the Yarra Valley.

EcoStar Accreditation is a high-level environmental accreditation for tourism businesses, delivered through Quality Tourism Australia and the Quality Tourism Framework. To achieve it, businesses must already meet Quality and Sustainable Tourism Accreditation requirements, then demonstrate more advanced environmental management and responsible tourism practices.

For Kangaroo Ridge Retreat, achieving EcoStar Accreditation means our sustainability work has been assessed against recognised tourism industry standards. It recognises practical action across areas such as sustainable resource use, environmental impact management, protection of the natural environment, cultural heritage awareness, environmental risk management, local and Indigenous community engagement, and the way sustainability is communicated to guests.

It also gives us a recognised framework for continuing to improve. EcoStar Accreditation allows tourism businesses to display official brandmarks, demonstrate environmental leadership, support grant and award submissions, and give eco-conscious travellers greater confidence that sustainability claims are backed by evidence, not just good intentions.

For us, that matters. Kangaroo Ridge Retreat is located in a beautiful, logistically difficult ridge-top setting, where energy, water, weather, land care, fire risk and local supply chains all require careful management. EcoStar Accreditation recognises the work we are doing now, while also giving us a clear pathway to keep strengthening our systems into the future.

For us, this is not just a badge for the website. It is recognition of the work already happening behind the scenes: the systems, choices and daily decisions that help us care for the ridge while offering guests a warm, comfortable and deeply local stay.

Kangaroo Ridge Retreat is an adults-only accommodation retreat in Healesville, Victoria, located on Wurundjeri Country in the Yarra Valley. Our sustainability approach is shaped by the realities of this place: steep land, bushland, wildlife, rainwater, fire risk, power interruptions, local roads, weather that has opinions, and a strong commitment to supporting our regional community.

EcoStar Accreditation brings this work together in a more formal and accountable way.

Our sustainability practices include 50 solar panels supported by 60 kWh of battery storage, helping us move towards greater energy independence while remaining grid-connected. We operate on rainwater, carefully manage waste and guest provisions, prioritise local sourcing, and continue to work towards reducing our reliance on gas.

Land care is also part of the story.

Our six working goats, Baby, Bieber, Bubba, Lucy, Motek and Mr Collins, help manage weeds, blackberries, grass and fire fuel across the steep parts of the ridge. They are not here as a petting zoo, although they do add a fair bit of character. They are part of how we care for the property in a practical, low-impact way that suits the land.

Sustainability at Kangaroo Ridge Retreat is not about pretending to be perfect. It is about improving the systems behind the stay.

It is the reason we invest in solar generation and battery storage. It is why we think carefully about water use, waste, local food, land management, dark skies, wildlife, fire awareness and the guest experience. It is why we support local producers, makers, growers, drivers and experience providers wherever possible.

For guests, the result should feel effortless. The cabin is warm. The lights come on. The bath runs. The local wine is waiting. The mountains do what the mountains do best.

Behind that ease is a lot of planning.

We are located at the end of the line, quite literally, so resilience matters. Storms, heat events, high winds and blackouts are part of our operating reality. Our investment in renewable energy infrastructure helps us generate, store and use more electricity onsite, while still remaining connected to the shared power network.

We also see sustainability as more than environmental management.

Kangaroo Ridge Retreat sits within a broader region shaped by deep cultural history, small businesses, agriculture, tourism, bushland and community. Our responsibility is to operate with care for the place we are part of, and to create a visitor experience that supports the Yarra Valley rather than simply using it as a backdrop.

Achieving EcoStar Accreditation is a proud milestone, but it is not the finish line.

It is a marker of progress, and a reminder to keep going.

Our next focus includes continuing to reduce reliance on gas, strengthening our sustainability systems, improving how we communicate responsible travel to guests, and making sure our choices remain practical for the realities of a small regional accommodation business.

The ridge will always be a little wild by nature.

Our job is to keep caring for it, improving the systems behind the stay, supporting our local region, and creating a guest experience where comfort and conscience can sit beautifully together.
