A quiet, guided night-sky experience for guests of Kangaroo Ridge Retreat.
Add a private 90-minute stargazing session to your stay and experience the night sky from our elevated ridge-top setting in Healesville. With wide southern-sky views, dark surrounds, and the comfort of your own private retreat waiting nearby, this is a slower, more intimate way to experience the Yarra Valley after dark.
Yarra Valley at Night
When the sun slips behind the hills and the valley quietens, the sky becomes part of the experience.
At Kangaroo Ridge Retreat, private stargazing is less about crowds and commentary, and more about space, stillness and wonder. It is just you, the night air, the open sky, and a guided introduction to what is unfolding above.
Led by Jessie from Yarra Valley Stargazing, this private 90-minute session invites you to slow down and look a little closer, from bright constellations and the Moon to planets, galaxies, and the stories that connect them.
Your retreat balcony already offers an open-sky outlook, but the experience itself begins at a dedicated viewing spot on the Ridge, chosen for its elevation, openness and clear southern aspect. On clear nights, Kangaroo Ridge has recorded Bortle Class 5 skies, which is a strong result for a location just over an hour from Melbourne. With darker surrounds, a wide outlook and the ridge helping soften city glow, it is a genuinely rewarding place to spend time under the stars.
We were very lucky to be there on a night where Aurora Australis was dazzling the night sky and it was absolutely unforgettable. The views there were honestly comparable to a stargazing experience that we previously had at Uluru and we would highly recommend adding this experience to your Kangaroo Ridge Retreat stay.

When to go stargazing in Victoria
Stargazing can be beautiful at any time of year.
Spring and summer often bring crisp evenings and bright constellations, while the cooler months offer longer nights and a deeper sense of stillness.
In winter, the sky can feel especially dramatic, making it a beautiful season for guests wanting to lean into the full ridge experience. With earlier sunsets, you have longer evenings to enjoy the stars. Because conditions matter, all sessions remain subject to weather.
Can you see the Aurora Australis?
On rare nights, yes.
Kangaroo Ridge Retreat’s elevated setting and southern outlook mean the Aurora Australis can sometimes be visible from here when conditions align. It is never guaranteed, but the possibility adds another layer of magic to time spent under the stars. Often, the aurora is easier to detect through a camera or device than with the naked eye.
